“27/01/21, a group of participants in the program Dare’In 21 attended their weekly programmed film meetings, which was this time about the movie “God on Trial”, suggested by the participant Aziz Oualid, and animated by the participant Asmae Harrat.

“God on Trial”, an English movie, written by Frank Cottrell Boyce, and produced in 2008 for BBC Two and PBS, starring Antony Sher, Rupert Graves, and Jack Shepherd.

Awaiting their inevitable deaths at one of the worst concentration camps“ Auschwitz” , which was operated by Nazi Germany during world war lI, a group of Jews made a rabbinical court in absentia, to decide whether God has gone against the Holy Covenant and if he is to blame for their suffering.

The film lasted for 1h30min, after which we had a very interesting discussion about the universal, controversial concept of God. Our discussion in a nutshell contained the following points:

Free will approaches, relating it to a scene when one of the prisoners was asked which of his sons would he choose to die first! “What free will are you talking about?” We are just like this prisoner, always limited to certain options in our lives, stated Asma.

Another point we discussed, is what we call “Fear-Based Thinking”, which kills our rational thinking towards what triggers fear in us, religions are no exception, they can prevent us from having that smooth “neutral” critical process of thinking, however, it’s not always
the case, nor is it the only factor that blocks us.
There was a guy in the movie, whose few hesitating interactions marked us, especially when he said : ”I’m just a man who makes and sells gloves”, was it fear that stopped him? or he was simply saying i’m just a gloves maker, ask me about gloves, how they’re made, it’s what I master, i’m just a humble small creator with very little knowledge of this immense life…

The last part of our discussion was concerning God’s attributes, as a very vital aspect in the study of theology, the most merciful, loving, the eternal being, the omniscient, the forgiving …does it contradict the reality? or it’s just out of our understanding, God’s wisdom that we might understand and may not? each has a different perception and it’s just contentious !”
